However, they were kept so far apart from the main storyline for five entire books that when they were introduced in earnest, SJM had to split off an entire novel to explain who they all were.

Why the hell would SJM do that? We had Nehemia once, but then she got murdered in the most explicit way possible as character and plot advancement for Aelin.
The final book in a thrilling series, Kingdom of Ash (KoA) ... Chaol, Dorian, and Manon are off forging their own paths in a different part of the continent, and Rowan races against time to find his beloved mate before he loses her forever. Come on!! The original trio will always have my heart.

I read the ACOTAR series in spite of them, but just didn’t have it in me to read the last “book.” I read Throne of Glass and planned to finish the series at some point. And have no trouble with her books. Assuming Ly survives, I hope she does remember. This review helped me cement my decision. For instance, some lines like “*insert bad guy’s name* sends his regards.” have been used in various forms throughout the history of witty badguys’ existence. Emrys Dorian agrees and they set off to enact the ritual, however, at the last moment, Aelin shoves Dorian out of the act, intent on doing this alone. Why can’t people be strong, indipendant AND have a husband/wife and children? In the mountains, witches hunt witches: Manon leads the Thirteen in search of the Crochan Witches. The only people who ended up actually sacrificing themselves in this book was Manon’s Thirteen.
SJM does not have it in her to make her characters confront mortality or old age or long-lasting trauma. Ever. Speaking of our favorite terrible fake-Fae … what is it she wants? I think there were many things SJM could have done a whole lot better with her books and I can only hope that she learns to do better in the future but I don’t hold out much hope.

The book wrapped up quite nicely with all the couples and characters gathering together for Aelin’s coronation, followed by the tear-jerking farewells as the all allies who’d come to help Aelin, from all the books and novellas, departed for their homes once again. I have a strange sympathy for the older witches, cruel as they are; like most of the characters in this series, they’re the product of war and conflict, and scraping out a defensive position in a world that doesn’t want them is somewhat understandable from a certain point of view. Okay, so I’m at the part where Dorian is sneaking away from the camp, and he’s reminiscing about his sneaky sex with Manon. I don’t know about the LOTR references, because I never had the attention span to read the book or watch all the movies (don’t ask me how I did manage to finish TOG, I don’t know either), but it seems legit. I came here because I saw your tweets about the LotR rip-offs and…I have no words. Dorian, with the help of Aelin, eventually destroys the prince inside him and the collar, regaining control of his own body. I agree that it is pretty unoriginal to copy this much, but you can also see it as an ode to the GoT and LOTR, once again establishing that these are great works of art. Nevertheless, Kingdom of Ash was a whirlwind read. The main character are not allowed to come into harm’s way, and will survive a number of scenarios that would have killed a lesser mortal.
This is an alternate take on if Dorian and Manon had gotten to retrieve the third Wyrdkey from Mala's Temple. But nothing came of it. And then when she and Rowan thought they were carranam, I was delighted at a close platonic hetero relationship. I loved Dorian in book one, but from what people have said about him later on in the series, he’s a complete jerk and is only there for sex. The entirety of part one had them fighting tooth and nail against an onslaught of armies, their relationship worsening with each battle they faced. It really calls to question the originality of this entire series. Meanwhile, the shapeshifter, Lysandra, is fulfilling the promise she made to Aelin by pretending to be her to keep up appearances, while the Queen’s cousin Aedion seethes and leads the Terrasen army in the fight. It is split into two parts, Armies & Allies and Gods & Gates. I feel that this is true for several of SJM’s novels, thought I still enjoy them much more than others on the market. I would have been ok with their ending if the book didn’t keep insisting on telling me how much they gave up. I think I just stared at the book for five minutes afterwards, shellshocked that this was it. Aelin’s arc was pretty much expected, but Manon and Dorian’s arcs were the most surprising events of the book. Please no spoilers for Kingdom of Ash in the comments! I am the most bitter about this particular plot point. Omg, a handful of background characters and half-ass last minute rep. We should fall to our knees in gratitude. Luckily, Aelin and troupe land back on home-soil and arrive just in time to join in the battle.
I just found them enjoyable enough. I feel the book’s ending is cheap because Aelin’s greatest sacrifice is her mortal human self…. Another thing I found distasteful about Kingdom of Ash is the obsession with ‘claiming’ when it came to sex. Aelin took years to stop being Celaena, to face up to who she was before she lost her family, and later her first love. Snarky Aelin serving the Gods some sass, ruining the chances of destroying Erawan there and then, and surviving the whole ordeal by the skin of her teeth once again. I mean, I get it makes a great scene, but she took away almost everything about Aelin. She was badass and conniving and flawed. What did you think of the finale?
