But that comfort dissipates as the plot moves forward at a bizarre, breakneck pace, and as enemies grow more difficult mid-fight – two key features that makes it stand out from its immediate competition. Outriders is, after all, billed as an online-focused co-op RPG, and it's clear that you'll have the most fun playing it this way. Pyromancer is a medium range class that can control fire. That's not to say the world itself isn't beautiful, but instead that it's sometimes generic, not nearly as captivating as its many systems and subsystems. Staple skill upgrades are here, such as increasing your health and increasing close-range weapons damage, decreasing damage taken from specific enemies and decreasing cooldowns. Alongside the powers of my Trickster, we were able to slow enemy movements to a crawl before laying waste to large swaths of them with an array of rockets or well-placed grenades. But the lack of any PvP modes or timed events might turn away fans of games as a service - as of right now, it looks like when you're done with Outriders' campaign, you're done. Fans of the rogue class will likely get their kicks out of the Trickster. With this being an early preview of Outriders, there were still plenty of skills that were locked by the time the session was over. Square-Enix dropped my fireteam of three outriders about 15 hours into the game, and we were able to explore the semi-open world for about two and a half hours. As expected in a shooter like Outriders, cover is a must, and, as my poor teammates learned from my initial enthusiasm, running straight ahead can lead to a quick death, stranding you from your fireteam easily. An owner of every console since Atari, Anthony is willing to try any video game, good or bad, but prefers the ones that involve a deep and involving story. I spent three hours on Enoch, and was left wanting more: more access to the branches on my massive skill tree, more weapons to craft and customize, and most importantly, more story. It does make some encounters frustrating if only because you feel like you're stuck in cover until you thin out the horde. There's military muscle facing an unknown entity with dry, Cool Guy retorts, the persistent threat from different alien species that all look like my varying sleep paralysis demons, and bloody, grimace-inducing death animations. A steady combination of these skills and my weapons easily dispatched most of my enemies, and much of the skill in Outriders is born out of juggling the medley of cooldowns and tracking enemy movements across beautiful environments laden with waist-high cover.
